Arranged and written by Hannah Goodwin, Little Flower is a tender and spacious ballad that weaves elements of modern jazz harmony with singer-songwriter sensitivity. This piece features rich, modal textures and poignant lyricism that allow both ensemble and soloist to shine.

The arrangement centers around a featured soprano or alto soloist, supported by full ensemble writing that ranges from delicate to full-bodied. Creative use of tension and release, particularly in the layered vocal backgrounds and piano voicings, keeps the listener engaged throughout. The groove alternates between ECM-influenced stillness and flowing movement, guided by brushed drums and light, atmospheric textures in the rhythm section.

Goodwin’s setting builds gradually into a climactic section that incorporates contemporary pop vocal stylings over lush, re-harmonized backgrounds—providing ample space for improvisation and expressive freedom.

Hannah sings the solo on the demo and The UNT Jazz Singers sing the background vocals, accompanied by members of the UNT Jazz Singers rhythm section. Little Flower is a heartfelt and sonically captivating addition to any jazz vocal program, ideal for groups looking to explore emotional nuance, contemporary harmonic language, and expressive solo work.
